Environmental Impact

As a local second-hand consignment fashion business, we have at our core a reduction of negative environmental impact for climate change & pollution.

  • We mainly deliver locally (no flights).
  • We use second-hand for our furniture, displays, appliances & electrical equipment.
  • We use certified recycled paper for our bags, packaging and office supplies.
  • We use certified cleaning products that reduce chemicals into drain-water.
  • Our electricity is 100% renewable.

We have a positive environmental impact locally & globally, as our second-hand business:

  • reduces water usage.
  • reduces chemical impact & raw material use from creation of new products, which can affect our biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • lowers resource use and contributes towards a circular economy.

For our new ethical capsule clothing collections, we find suppliers that are certified with compliance such as:

  • Oeko-tex – for reduction of harmful chemicals.
  • GOTS – for organic cotton.

See our forthcoming Sustainability report at the end of July for more details.

Social Impact

Our workforce comes from diversified backgrounds and we comply with minimum wage standards in Switzerland and above living wage for our contractors.

For our new ethical capsule clothing collections, we find suppliers that are certified with compliance for human rights such as:

  • Fairwear
  • WRAP
  • Fairtrade
  • SMETA

We have a positive social impact locally, as our second-hand business gives the Swiss an option to reduce consumption and to not waste.

We have a positive social impact globally, as our second-hand business recycles clothes and keeps them out of landfill and dumping on majority countries.

See our forthcoming Sustainability report at the end of July for more details.

Governance

We are proud that our business model is ethical at its core and from the idea to market. We have not compromised on this.

Value chain is the DNA of commerce and lack of governance by companies on this has caused the problematic environmental and social situation we are now in…..

Our due diligence means that we have continually worked to see how we can not only improve, but our governance and decision making prevents us from choosing negative impact pathways in the first place.

We are self-funded, so our decision making remains in our control.

Our stakeholders are principally our customers and we are pleased that the majority of our clients feel the same way and for those few that initially did not, we have provided a space for engagement and discussion on sustainability in the fashion sector.

We are also proud that we have actively sought out local & ethical suppliers and a page on our ethical style suppliers is here: Ethical Fashion

We have represented DOWNTOWN UPTOWN at various meetings in Geneva,
at the UN, in the Swiss press, on radio and TV, highlighting our sustainable practices.
